The Ganesh Mandal Committee: Roles That Actually Keep It Running
A sarvajanik Ganesh mandal is run by volunteers who mostly have day jobs, doing this out of devotion in whatever time they can spare. That is what makes clear roles so important. When everyone owns a specific part, things get done. When ownership is fuzzy, everything becomes "someone will handle it," and someone often does not.
This matters more than it used to. Now that Maharashtra treats Ganeshotsav as a state festival with grants and formal recognition[1], a mandal is expected to be organised and accountable, not just enthusiastic.
The roles a mandal actually needs
- President (Adhyaksh). The final call on decisions, the public face, and the person who keeps the peace when opinions clash.
- Secretary. Coordination and communication: permissions, the program, and making sure decisions are recorded rather than just discussed.
- Treasurer (Khajindar). The most exposed role. Owns every rupee of vargani and expense, and has to be able to show a clean account to donors at any time.
- Vargani collectors. The team on the ground with the receipt books, whose entries have to reconcile perfectly at the end.
- Volunteer and program leads. Decoration, sound, prasad, security, and the daily aarti and cultural schedule, each with a clear owner.
Roles fail without accountability
Naming roles is the easy part. The hard part is that most of the actual work still lives as loose promises in the mandal WhatsApp group, which means even a well-structured committee loses track of who agreed to do what.
The treasurer feels this worst. They are accountable for the money, but the collections and expenses arrive as scattered messages that someone has to reconcile by hand at the worst possible time.
Give each role a clean view of its own work
Niyojan reads the mandal WhatsApp group and organises it by exactly this structure: the treasurer gets a live ledger of vargani and expenses, tasks and responsibilities become a trackable list so volunteers know what they own, and decisions are logged on their own. The Core Team can edit everything while members get a read-only view. Clear roles on paper finally match a clear picture of the work.
